Life#
Hasan Şevki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Şevki also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Hasan Şevki knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 18, in 1891/92, Hasan Şevki began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1904/05 places Hasan Şevki in Galata, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1898/99 in the Emanet Kitabeti.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 1,000 in 1902/03, in the Emanet Kitabeti in Galata, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
