Life#
Mehmet Şerif Efendi was born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1867/68, Mehmet Şerif began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Trikala (Tırhala), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Mehmet Şerif in Trikala in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Şerif back to Larissa, the birthplace, from 1870 to 1873, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then five places in 13 years, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1876/77. Mehmet Şerif then moved to Salihli from 1885 to 1897. The last posts were in Domokos and Salihli from 1897 to 1901 and Nevşehir from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 800 in 1897/98, the peak, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in Domokos, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 209,580 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
