Life#
Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Saray Hizmetlisi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Tahsin also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1875/76, Tahsin began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Tahsin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Komotini (Gümülcine), where the entries run to 1880/81. Tahsin then moved to Samsun in 1883/84. The last posts were in Alaçam from 1884 to 1892.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 380 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 51,480 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1891/92; the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
