Life#
Ohannes Efendi was born in Ankara in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian school for young children (Ermeni Sıbyan Mektebi); Ohannes also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Ohannes began work in Ankara in 1860/61, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Ohannes as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ankara, the birthplace. Next came Göynük from 1864 to 1878. From 1878 to 1893 the annual entries place Ohannes in Nallıhan. The lists give Tekaud for 1893/94 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 600 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Göynük, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 32 years of salary come to 213,924 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
