Life#
Born in Sivas in 1841/42 (AH 1257), Muhyiddin Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Work began in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 16, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Muhyiddin Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sivas, the birthplace. Next came Basra, Burdur, Isparta, Mocha (Muha) and Yemen, five places in 11 years, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1874/75, then Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1875 to 1879. The last post was in Yemen again in 1879/80. Mocha, about 3,000 km from Sivas, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 450 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 3,000 in 1874/75, the peak, as Müfettiş in Yemen, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,000 kuruş. In all, 16 years of salary come to 290,400 kuruş, 2.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1879/80.
