Life#
Abdullah Efendi was born in Harput in 1834/35 (AH 1250) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1856/57, at about 22, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1861/62, places Abdullah in Sofia (Sofya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdullah then moved to Prizren in 1862/63, then Basra from 1864 to 1876. Next came Taiz from 1876 to 1880, then Tarsus in 1881/82 and Ermenek in 1882/83. The annual lists then follow Abdullah to Kilis from 1883 to 1893. The last post was in Aleppo (Halep) in 1893/94. Taiz, about 2,850 km from Harput, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to 2,640 in 1865/66, the peak, as Müdür in Basra, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 495,780 kuruş, 2.4 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
