Life#
Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ziya also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in Edirne in 1880/81, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Ziya in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), where the entries run to 1884/85. Ziya then moved to six places in 11 years, from Edirne to Nallıhan, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1885/86, then Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık) from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Selbuken from 1903 to 1905 and Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1903/04. Ten places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 720 in 1903/04, as 2. Müdür in Selbuken, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 137,520 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
