Life#
Hafız Abdullah Hulusi Efendi was born in Simav in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Hulusi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1889/90, Abdullah Hulusi began work in Simav, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, 31 worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Abdullah Hulusi in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Hudavendigar from 1901 to 1903. The last posts were in Simav, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Simav, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
