Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Adil Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Adil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 19, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet Adil in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Adil to Beyoğlu from 1894 to 1899, then Büyükada in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Haydarpaşa from 1900 to 1904, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1902/03.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1902/03, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Haydarpaşa, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 33,600 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
