Life#
İlya Faik Efendi was born in Burdur in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); İlya Faik also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
İlya Faik began work in Hayrabolu in 1892/93, at about 27, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with İlya Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Hayrabolu. Next came Pristina (Priştine), Adana, Pozantı and Konya, four places in five years. The last post was in Adana again in 1898/99, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Hayrabolu, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
