Life#
Hüseyin Avni Efendi was born in Sivas in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Avni also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hüseyin Avni began work in Sivas in 1882/83, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Hüseyin Avni as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Sivas, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1893/94. Next came Geyve from 1894 to 1898. The last posts were in Mudanya from 1899 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 540 in 1899/1900, as 3. Müdür in Mudanya, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
