Life#
Mehmet Fuat Efendi was born in Mersin in 1878 (AH 1295), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Fuat also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Arabic, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1893/94, Mehmet Fuat began work in Bulanık, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mehmet Fuat in Acre (Akka) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Fuat to Kayseri, Ajloun (Aclun) and Rashaya (Raşeya) from 1899 to 1906, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1900/01. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1906/07, with a rise to official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 700 in 1906/07, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
