Life#
Born in Sidirokastro (Demirhisar) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), İbrahim Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1878, İbrahim Hakkı began work in Sidirokastro, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places İbrahim Hakkı in Skopje (Üsküp) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1887/88. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Hakkı to Kumanovo (Kumanova) from 1888 to 1891. From 1891 to 1907 every annual entry places İbrahim Hakkı in Serres (Siroz). A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 400 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Kumanovo, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 95,460 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
