Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Mustafa Yusuf Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Muhacirin Memuru". Mustafa Yusuf had four years of schooling, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1900/01, Mustafa Yusuf began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1905/06 places Mustafa Yusuf in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Çorlu.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Çorlu, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 52 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
