Life#
Born in Blagoevgrad (Yukarı Cuma) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Asım Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Asım also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
At about 14, in 1887/88, Mustafa Asım began work in Preveza (Preveze), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 240 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Mustafa Asım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Louros (Loros). Next came Margilic in 1892/93 and Preveza in 1893/94, then Aleppo (Halep) from 1894 to 1901. The last posts were in İskenderun in 1901/02, as an acting director (Müdür Vekili), and Aleppo in 1902/03 and Baalbek in 1903/04.
The salary went from 240 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 650 in 1901/02, the peak, as Müdür Vekili in İskenderun, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 475 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
