Life#
Şevket Makri Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Şevket Makri knew four languages, Arabic, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 19, in 1895/96, Şevket Makri began work in Aleppo, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Şevket Makri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in İskenderun from 1903 to 1905.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 300 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in İskenderun, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 16,800 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
