Life#
Born in Kars in 1877/78 (AH 1294), Ahmet Faik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmet Faik began work in Kastamonu in 1894/95, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1899/1900 to 1905/06 places Ahmet Faik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Zonguldak.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Zonguldak, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 25,200 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. Ahmet Faik probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Karslı memurlar (1879-1909)" by RÜVEYDE ÇİFÇİ (2015) (the name and the birthplace agree).
