Life#
Abdülkadir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülkadir also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 25, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Abdülkadir in Sofia (Sofya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdülkadir then moved to Bilecik in 1870/71, as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), then Çerkeş from 1871 to 1877. Next came Tosya and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1877 to 1883. From 1883 to 1900 the annual entries place Abdülkadir in Kočani (Koçana).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 600 in 1876/77, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Çerkeş, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 217,020 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1899/1900, the list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
