Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1892/93, Mehmet Akif began work in Eregli, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmet Akif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kočani (Koçana). Next came Payas, Aleppo (Halep) and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Belen from 1899 to 1902.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Payas, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less.
