Life#
Born in Manisa in 1824/25 (AH 1240), Dokmecizade Haci Osman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Dokmecizade Haci Osman had seven years of schooling, at the Adliye Mektebi, and wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
At about 35, in 1859/60, Dokmecizade Haci Osman began work in the Defteri Hakani Kalemi in Sinop, on a first salary of 350 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 35 or older. The first annual entry, for 1861/62, places Dokmecizade Haci Osman in Sinop in the land office (Arazi Kalemi), where the entries run to 1870/71. The annual lists then follow Dokmecizade Haci Osman to Izmir (İzmir) from 1874 to 1878. The last posts were in Burdur from 1878 to 1884. The lists give Infisal for 1871/72 and Azil (dismissal) for 1884/85 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to a peak of 950 in 1874/75, in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in Izmir, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 156,000 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1884/85.
