Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1843/44 (AH 1259), Hayreti Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hayreti had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1863/64, Hayreti began work in the Mal Kalemi in Tatarpazari, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Hayreti in the Mal Kitabeti in Pazardzhik (Tatarpazarcığı). Hayreti then moved to Vize, Kazgan and Malkara from 1867 to 1872, then Katerini (Katerin) from 1872 to 1879, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The annual lists then follow Hayreti to Nigotin, Kavadarci (Kavadar) and Polygyros (Poliroz) from 1879 to 1885. The last post was in Avrathisar in 1885/86. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 600 in 1869/70, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kazgan, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 129,840 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1885/86.
