Life#
Hüseyin Ziya Efendi was born in Curuksu in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Istanbul in 1861/62, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 576 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Hüseyin Ziya in Vidin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1868/69. Next came nine places in 22 years, from Hârșova (Hırsova) to Danismend, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1885/86, then Misrata from 1891 to 1896, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Fasatu from 1896 to 1899. In all, 12 places on three continents, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Fasatu, about 2,850 km from Curuksu, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 576 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to a peak of 1,000 in 1891/92, as 2. Müdür in Misrata, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
