Life#
Vakayadi Eskipiyos Efendi was born in Boyacikoy in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Vakayadi Eskipiyos also attended the telegraph school, and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
At about 15, in 1874/75, Vakayadi Eskipiyos began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Vakayadi Eskipiyos as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Yeni camii postanesi. Vakayadi Eskipiyos then moved to Arnavutkoy in 1877/78. From 1878 to 1887 the annual entries place Vakayadi Eskipiyos in Yeniköy.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 500 in 1878, as Muhabere Memuru in Yeniköy, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
