Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Süleyman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman also attended the telegraph school.
At about 16, in 1868/69, Süleyman began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 145 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Süleyman in Rumelihisarı as an official (Memur). Next came Yeniköy from 1876 to 1883, then Büyükdere from 1883 to 1885. For 1885 to 1889 the lists have no entry. Süleyman then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1889 to 1892. From 1892 to 1903 every annual entry places Süleyman again in Rumelihisarı.
Pay rose from 145 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 500 in 1901/02, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Rumelihisarı, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 102,480 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
