Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sadık Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1886/87, Mehmet Sadık began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Mehmet Sadık in Emirgan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Rumelihisarı from 1892 to 1901.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 250 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Rumelihisarı, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less.
