Life#
This official was born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1897/98, the official began work in Sidon, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places the official in Jaffa (Yafa) as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The lists have no entry for 1905 to 1909. The last post was in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1909/10.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Posta Memuru in Jaffa, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
