Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Kadri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin Kadri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 13, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Hüseyin Kadri as a factory official (Fabrika Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Suriye from 1903 to 1906, with a rise to machine official (Makine Memuru).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Makine Memuru in Suriye, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 104,400 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
