Life#
Mehmet Namik Efendi was born in Omurtag (Osmanpazarı) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1883/84, Mehmet Namik began work in Çankırı, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Namik in Kastamonu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Namik to Çankırı from 1886 to 1893. The last post was in Kastamonu again in 1893/94.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 400 in 1893/94, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less.
