Life

Ahmet Sabri Efendi was born in Rize in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a member of a court (mahkeme azası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Sabri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1893/94, Ahmet Sabri began work in Rize, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Only 31 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1904/05 and 1905/06, place Ahmet Sabri in Rize, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Rize, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
