Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Basri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Basri also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Basri began work in Menemen in 1904/05, at about 28, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Hasan Basri in Menemen as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Erzincan from 1906 to 1909.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 400 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
