Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295), David Nesim Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was an attorney (dava vekili). Schooling took seven years, at the Hamidi Rusdiyesi.
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 25, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places David Nesim in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). From 1905 to 1908 the annual entries place David Nesim in Büyükada.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Büyükada, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 10,200 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
