Life#
Mustafa İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "emekli". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa İsmet also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 24, in 1904/05, Mustafa İsmet began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mustafa İsmet in the same office, Masarifat Kitabeti, in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 100 in 1906/07, in the Masarifat Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less.
