Life#
Aziz Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 13, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Aziz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Pristina (Priştine), where the entries run to 1893/94. Aziz then moved to Bandırma, Beyoğlu, Selimiye, Karabulak and Blagoevgrad (Yukarı Cuma), five places in nine years. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 400 in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Bandırma, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 40,680 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
