Life#
Mehmet Reşat Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Reşat also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Reşat began work in Behiste in 1889/90, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Mehmet Reşat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kavala, where the entries run to 1893/94. Mehmet Reşat then moved to Chrysoupoli (Sarışaban) from 1894 to 1902. The last posts were in Ioannina in 1902/03, in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) and Delvine in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 900 in 1903/04, as 2. Müdür in Delvine, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
