Life#
Mehmet Şevki Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Şevki also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1892/93, Mehmet Şevki began work in Bitola, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmet Şevki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sjenica (Seniçe). Next came Peja (İpek) from 1895 to 1897, then Firuz from 1897 to 1902. The last post was in Delvine in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 540 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Delvine, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
