Life#
Mehmet Nazif Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 14, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mehmet Nazif in Beyoğlu as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1902/03. Mehmet Nazif then moved to Kucuk karaburun, Beyoğlu and Gelibolu from 1903 to 1908, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1903/04. The last post was in Kayseri in 1909/10.
Pay rose from 60 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 400 in 1909/10, as Muhabere Memuru in Kayseri, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 28,980 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
