Life#
Mehmet Said Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1858/59 (AH 1275), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 11, in 1869/70, Mehmet Said began work in Damascus (Şam), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mehmet Said as Jandarma in Damascus, where the entries run to 1881/82. The lists have no entry for 1882 to 1886. Mehmet Said then moved to Üsküdar, Istanbul and Ankara from 1886 to 1894, then Eskişehir from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1900 to 1904, with a rise to Posta Saye Memuru.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 800 in 1900/01, as Posta Saye Memuru in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 132,000 kuruş, 77 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
