Life

Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 11, in 1876/77, Hasan Tahsin began work in Edirne, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Hasan Tahsin in Edirne as Devriye Muderrisligi, where the entries run to 1878/79. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1890. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1890 to 1895.

The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 120 in 1878, the peak, as Devriye Muderrisligi in Edirne, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less.
