Life#
Born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Muhittin Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Muhittin also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Humus in 1896/97, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Muhittin in Al-Salt (Salt) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1901/02. The annual lists then follow Muhittin to Madya, Al-Salt and Al-Zabadani (Zebedani) from 1902 to 1906. The last post was in Homs (Humus) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 800 in 1901/02, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Al-Salt, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
