Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Hikmet Efendi was the child of a tithe official (aşar memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Hikmet also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Mustafa Hikmet began work in Istanbul in 1900/01, at about 21, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Mustafa Hikmet in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a registry clerk (Mukayyit). The last posts were in Yemen from 1902 to 1906 and Mocha (Muha) in 1906/07, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1902/03. Mocha, about 3,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 35 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 800 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mocha, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
