Life#
Mehmet Bedri Efendi was born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Sandik Emini". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1899/1900, Mehmet Bedri began work in Vushtrri (Vulçıtrın), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Bedri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 300 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 16,800 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Kayıtlarına göre Üsküp doğumlu memurlar" by HALENUR DİLOĞLU (2021) probably refers to Mehmet Bedri, since the name and the birthplace agree.
