Life#
Born in Jaffa (Yafa) in 1878 (AH 1295), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Şükrü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 14, in 1891/92, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Şükrü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Jerusalem (Kudüs). Mehmet Şükrü then moved to Acre (Akka), Gaza (Gazze) and Baalbek from 1896 to 1901. The last post was in Damascus (Şam) in 1901/02, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 645 in 1901/02, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Damascus, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 28,740 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
