Life#
Born in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Faik Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Süleyman Faik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1895/96, Süleyman Faik began work in Koy Sanjaq (Köysancak), with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Süleyman Faik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Mosul (Musul).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Mosul, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
