Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community, Yusuf Sabanlı Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Yusuf Sabanlı had four years of schooling, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Al-Faw (Fav) in 1891/92, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 340 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Yusuf Sabanlı as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Al-Faw. Next came Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1893 to 1898, then a return to Mosul, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1904. The last posts were in Basra in 1904/05 and Al-Faw again in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 340 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 750 in 1905/06, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Al-Faw, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
