Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Ferit Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Ferit began work in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 29, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 29 or older.
