Life#
Zeynel Efendi was born in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Zeynel began work in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 10, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 33 started at 10 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1898/99, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Zeynel in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 150 in 1903/04, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less.
