Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Zülfikar Zihni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Zülfikar Zihni had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1886/87, Zülfikar Zihni began work in Diyarbakır, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1902/03 places Zülfikar Zihni in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Diyarbakır, the birthplace.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less.
