Life#
Zülfü Efendi was born in Elazığ in 1857/58 (AH 1274), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1877/78, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Zülfü in Diyarbakır as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Zülfü to Cizre, Diyarbakır and Mosul (Musul) from 1878 to 1882, then back to Elazığ, the birthplace, from 1883 to 1895. Next came a return to Diyarbakır from 1895 to 1903. The last posts were in Midyat from 1903 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1903/04, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Midyat, when two in three paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 140,160 kuruş, 79 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
