Life#
Born in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) in 1826/27 (AH 1242), Cafer Sadik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Cafer Sadik began work in the Mal Kalemi in Kibris in 1845, at about 18, on a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1845, places Cafer Sadik in Kibris as Emlak Memuru, where the entries run to 1852/53. The annual lists then follow Cafer Sadik to Tuzla from 1853 to 1873, then Osmaneli in 1873/74. Cafer Sadik then moved back to Tuzla from 1874 to 1876, with a rise to Emlak Muharriri in 1875/76, then Zor and Mentese from 1878 to 1880, with a rise to Asar Basmemuru in 1878. The last posts were in Bolu from 1880 to 1882. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 39 years or more.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1845 to 3,000 in 1878, the peak, as Asar Basmemuru in Zor, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less.
