Life#
Yorgaki Vasilyadi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Bakkal". Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Yorgaki Vasilyadi also attended the telegraph school, and spoke Greek (Rum) and Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
At about 17, in 1865/66, Yorgaki Vasilyadi began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Yorgaki Vasilyadi as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1869/70. Yorgaki Vasilyadi then moved to Tarabya from 1873 to 1875, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1873/74. From 1875 to 1886 every annual entry places Yorgaki Vasilyadi again in Beyoğlu, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 750 in 1875/76, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1885/86.
